E-waste Fundraiser to Support Reef Check Hawaii

Donate your used, unwanted, obsolete, or broken cell-phones, PDAs, digital cameras,  MP3 players, inkjet cartridges, system consoles (nintendo playstations, sega, etc, ) to Reef Check Hawaii. We will ship the items off-island where they will be either refurbished or disposed of in an ecologically sound manner.

Did you know?

Used cell phones are plentiful!  Inform, an independent research organization, issued a study explaining that there are more than 500 million used, out-of-commission, and obsolete cell phones in homes and offices across America.

Environmental hazards if not disposed of properly. Cell phones are damaging to our air, soil and water:

  • One cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of water.
  • Cell phones (and other electronic devices) contain toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and beryllium that pollute the air when burned in incinerators (think H-power instead of personal incinerators) and leach into soil and drinking water when buried in landfills.
  • Cadmium can damage kidneys when transfered through air and food.
  • Lead accumulates in land fills and can cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems.
  • Mercury gets into our water supply, accumulates in living organisms, and travels up the food chain. The principal exposure pathway is through food, and chronic or excess exposure can lead to brain damage.
  • Reef Check Hawaii's e-waste campaign is great for Hawaii's environment because all the cell phones and ink jet cartridges that are collected are either refurbished or disposed of using only the most ecologically sound methods.
  • Participating in Reef Check Hawaii's campaign helps Hawaii's environment by ensuring the phones you send to us do not end up in our landfills where they may pollute our drinking water, streams, and/or oceans.
